Mary Ellen Sprouffske, CSJ died peacefully on February 22, 2023 at St. John of God Retirement and Care Center in Los Angeles.
Our Los Angeles Province includes sisters, associates and ‘ohana all rooted in following the call of the Spirit and service of the dear neighbor. In 1870, seven sisters from St. Louis left everything they knew and journeyed to Tucson to start a school at the request of the newly appointed bishop in Arizona. Over the years, the Los Angeles Province has expanded to include sisters, associates and ‘ohana living and ministering in California, Idaho, Hawaii and Japan.

Sister Anne Lorraine Mahlmeister, CSJ died in Los Angeles, California on January 26, 2023.
Sister Mary Veronica Brutosky died on January 21, 2023 in Los Angeles. She was born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania.
Sister Rose Adrian Peukert died on January 8, 2023 at St. John’s Medical Center in Santa Monica, California.
Sister Anne Bernadette Stead, CSJ died December 15, 2022, at Carondelet Center in Los Angeles. Born in San Diego, Elizabeth Jane Stead came from a family with eight children.
Margaret “Peggy” Murray, CSJ died peacefully on December 15, 2022, at St. John of God Care Center in Los Angeles, California.
Sister Anne Gertrude Fitzgerald, CSJ died peacefully on Sunday, November 20, 2022, at St. John of God Care Center in Los Angeles. She was 107.
It is with sad hearts that we share that Sister Mary Williams passed over into new life on July 31, 2022 in Santa Monica, California.
Sister Claire Latham passed away on June 19, 2022, at St. John of God Retirement Center in Los Angeles, California.

We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
