Remembering Sister Kathleen Maier, CSJ

Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet

July 26, 1925 – December 21, 2023

Kathleen Maier, CSJ

Born in Seattle, Washington in 1925, Sister Kathleen Maier (Sister Mary Peter) died just two years short of 100 years old on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at California Hospital Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Sister Kathleen entered the community of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1944 in Los Angeles. She was an elementary and high school teacher for over 42 years, teaching a combination of home economics, history, English and religion in at least eight Catholic high schools. She especially enjoyed teaching art and advising yearbook staff.

She also ministered at various times as a librarian, archivist at Daniel Freeman Hospital and freelance artist. Sister Kathleen could be a fascinating conversationalist, and she was capable of creating a beautiful home and garden. Her sensitive nature required quiet and peaceful surroundings.

Sister Kathleen no longer needs to wait for the Christ we celebrate at Christmas. She is now in His loving Presence.

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
