The Los Angeles Province Fall DESIGNS magazine will be in the mail soon! The theme this season is “The Power of the Present Moment.”
Many of our sisters and associates sent in beautiful reflections of their experience with how to get into the present moment. We were not able to fit all these pearls of wisdom in the magazine, so we are highlighting them here.
This one is from Anne Harpham, `Ohana Director:
“Ua ola loko i ke aloha (love gives life within).”
— Hawaiian proverb.
The kaona (underlying meaning) behind this proverb is that love is imperative to one’s well-being (Olelo No’eau: Hawaiian Proverbs & Poetical Sayings by Mary Kawena Pukui).
The news, whether close to home or across the globe, is urgent and unsettling. War, famine, disease, divisive political discourse, hate and anger, rising oceans and worsening storms. It can overwhelm but we must never lose sight that love and goodness surround us as well. Like the new Sacred Hearts School that has grown out of the ashes of Lahaina, Hawai`i because of the generosity of many. Those who daily and without fanfare help the houseless and hungry. The small miracles in which we see God’s presence—if we look and listen.
Our prayer as we gathered as `ohana this fall invited us to be attuned to where we are instruments of goodness, to let the God of love sing love’s song through us.
May that song of love sing through you as well. We offer you from the Islands a lei of love: May each flower remind us of the beauty of God’s love, may the fragrance permeate our lives, may the vibrant colors lift our spirits, may the flowers woven together remind us of our connectiveness, may the sharing of lei bring joy and remind us always of the lives we touch past, present and future and in the inherit goodness possible in each life.
