Reflection

Quietness Begins Within

 Los Angeles Province

The Los Angeles Province Fall DESIGNS magazine will be in the mail soon! The theme this season is “The Power of the Present Moment.”

Many of our sisters and associates sent in beautiful reflections of their experience with how to get into the present moment. We were not able to fit all these pearls of wisdom in the magazine, so we are highlighting them here.

Therese Denham, CSJ

This one is from Sister Therese Denham, CSJ:

Most of us are busy with activities that surround us. Quietness, however, has to begin within. It calls to us from our very soul. A soul that is quiet within can survive the disquiet without.

My creative art works have been my guide throughout my years. Drawing takes a quiet soul.

When I taught art in school there was absolute quietness in the room. The focus each child had was a beautiful experience. And no child wanted to be disturbed when drawing or coloring. As a teacher I could experience the solemnity of the present moment. When I remember those children it is an awesome moment for me.

As I have moved through the years to draw a straight line or to color comes from within. For you, it might be sewing or simply drinking a cup of tea. Be aware of these moments.

When they happen in prayer you know the power of the present moment.

With attention you can also bring these moments to your own life and your own soul.

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
