Remembering Sister Marie Juliette Nguyen, CSJ

 Los Angeles Province

July 29, 1920 – February 21, 2021

Marie Juliette Nguyen, CSJ

Sister Marie Juliette Nguyen, CSJ died at the age of 101 on February 21, 2022 at St. John of God Care Center in Los Angeles. She was born in Hue, Vietnam in 1920. In 1935, she entered the Daughters of Mary Immaculate in Vietnam. She held many administrative positions in that community. As the conflict in Vietnam ended, the sisters were among those who fled in desperate circumstances. They went in a rowboat out to an American ship as rockets were exploding around them.

Sister Marie ultimately found her way to San Diego. In 1985, she entered the Sisters of St Joseph of Carondelet through our Los Angeles Province. She once said, “I am grateful to the sisters for accepting me into their community, and after all these years, I feel happy with them, even if I still miss my homeland.”

Sister Marie ministered for more than 30 years in Tucson, Arizona. She was a woman of faith and prayer, courage and tenacity. She had a deep love of beauty and harmony, especially as found in nature. May she rest in peace.

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
