Margaret Callahan, CSJ

Sister Margaret Callahan died peacefully on April 29, 2024 at St. John of God Care Center in Los Angeles.

She was born Marion Agnes in Inglewood, California on August 11, 1920. She was the oldest of four children in a close-knit family. Following graduation from St. Mary’s Academy in 1937, she entered the community of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, and in March 1938, she received the name Sister Margaret Alacoque.

In her early years of ministry, Sister Margaret loved teaching primary grades. She said, “It was indeed a happy experience to instruct others in the faith.” For 27 years, she taught high school Spanish, history and math. Sister Margaret had diverse interests and ministries in education and pastoral care. Her hobbies included reading mysteries and Western stories, sewing and doing crossword puzzles.

Sister Margaret was strong and dignified with an intensity that was softened by an unusually calm and steady nature. She was astute and said what she meant. She lived a prayerful life and shared that spirit with those she met.

May she rest in peace.

Sister taught me in the 1st and 2nd grades at St. Cecilia’s Catholic School in Los Angeles. She prepared me for my First Confession and First Communion in 1944 and chose me to crown the Blessed Mother that afternoon. She has been continually prayed for with the reminder of her love for the Sacred Heart and the picture of the Sacred Heart that has continuously been on my many walls over all these years. May she now in our Lord’s hands help others to also plant the loving seeds of Faith.

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
