Remembering Sister Annette Debs, CSJ

 Los Angeles Province

January 20, 1939 – July 5, 2025

Annette Debs, CSJ

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Annette Debs, who passed away on July 5, 2025, at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. She was 86 years of age.

Annette Debs was born in Los Angeles, California, the third of five children. Annette attended St. Francis of Assisi Grade School and Bishop Conaty High School. She was an excellent and enthusiastic student who loved learning—a trait she carried with her throughout her life.

Sister Annette entered the community of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1958 and received the name Sister Mary Tecla. A significant aspect of her ministerial life was completing law school in a program focused on social justice issues. For many years, she worked to provide low-cost legal services to the poor. For 18 years, Sister Annette served as an administrative law judge with the State of California for cases involving unemployment, state disability and employment taxes.

Her great love of the poor was expressed in action. Sister Annette was upbeat and pleasant with an infectious laugh and a great sense of humor. She lived out of her authentic self as a minister of great love, a carrier of grace to those often overlooked. She loved big and loved all. She embraced the entire Body of Christ.

Funeral services for Sister Annette will be held on Wednesday, August 20 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Chapel at Carondelet Center, 11999 Chalon Rd. in Los Angeles.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Los Angeles Province, 11999 Chalon Road, Los Angeles, CA 90049 or donate online.

May she rest in peace.

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
