Anne Lorraine Mahlmeister, CSJ

Sister Anne Lorraine Mahlmeister, CSJ died in Los Angeles, California on January 26, 2023. She was born in Chula Vista, California, the youngest of seven children, and baptized Veronica Imelda,

Because of her mother’s chronic illness, Veronica was brought to the Sisters of Nazareth as an infant, and remained there until she was three years old. She became a resident student at Nazareth and then at Our Lady of Peace in San Diego. Following graduation in 1948, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet community.

Nearly 22 of her 27 years teaching grade school were in the first grade. She taught with the hope of establishing a positive environment to help children with self esteem. She was something of a pioneer in the field of early childhood education, leading the way for others.

Sister Anne Lorraine used her gifts, talents and knowledge generously. She dedicated herself to excellent care for the very young. We all benefitted and are grateful for her presence among us.

May she rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy is with her religious sisters and all of her friends and family. I knew Sr. Anne Lorraine Mahlmeister since about 1994 when we took a class together in Spokane, Wa. After that, we continued to send each other Christmas mail over the years, staying in touch with each other and our lives. I found her to be a very positive, good natured, and caring person and will always be grateful for her.
    Sincerely and with prayers,
    Sr. Mary Frances Kluss, OSB

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
