June 17, 1915 – November 20, 2022
Sister Anne Gertrude Fitzgerald, CSJ died peacefully on Sunday, November 20, 2022, at St. John of God Care Center in Los Angeles. She was 107.
Sister Anne was born June 17, 1915, in Spokane Washington. She was one of nine children in a very religious family. Following her sisters, Catherine Anita and Constance, Anne Gertrude entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet community on March 19, 1935.
During her ministerial life, she became a master teacher and served 33 years directly with students. Her versatility and responsiveness to others were evident as she responded to various needs including time as a missionary in Brazil and ministering to the elderly and homebound in northern and southern California. She was a woman who was always ready to be of service. She gave generously of herself well beyond the age of retirement.
She was preceded in death by all of her sisters and brothers. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Sister Anne Gertrude spoke of having enjoyed “good community and survived poor community relatively unscathed.” For a very brief time, she did experience a retirement of sorts—a time to sip contentedly from the fragrant wine of life.
We will miss her presence among us. May she rest in peace.
