Anne Bernadette Stead, CSJ

November 21, 1923 – December 15, 2022

Sister Anne Bernadette Stead, CSJ died December 15, 2022, at Carondelet Center in Los Angeles. Born in San Diego, Elizabeth Jane Stead came from a family with eight children. She was able to remain very close to her seven siblings and their families throughout her life.

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on a Friday in 1942, and found herself teaching in an elementary school the following Monday. For over 53 years, she ministered as a teacher and, at times, assistant principal. Fifteen schools benefited from her expertise in first through eighth grades, from California to Hawaii.

Sister Anne Bernadette loved to cook and bake. All her hobbies benefited others, in small and great ways. In 2010, she came to live at Carondelet Center as a very active retired sister. In her spare time, she helped her family members with their needs and assisted those who became ill. Approaching the age of 100, her generous life reminds us to be all of which woman is capable, at any age, in any setting.

Her community spirit, prayerfulness, good humor and everyday common sense will be greatly missed.

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
