Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Marie Herbert Seiter, who died peacefully on March 19, 2026, at Carondelet Village in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The youngest of Marie and Herbert Seiter’s five children, Patricia Anne was born April 1, 1937. She attended St. Stephen’s Grade School and St. Margaret’s Academy.

After graduating, Pat joined the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1955, where she was given the name Sister Marie Herbert, in honor of her loving parents.

Her academic prowess was vast and included a bachelor of arts in history with minors in math and education from the College of St. Catherine (1960), a master of arts in history from the University of Chicago (1963), and a master of science in economics from the University of Minnesota (1989). Additionally, she received a Fulbright Scholarship to study in India in 1966. This began a lifetime of study trips to many parts of the world.

Destined to a life in education, Sister Marie Herbert began teaching high school at Derham Hall High and Central Catholic High School in Marshall, Minnesota. She then served as assistant principal and then principal at St. Joseph Academy in St. Paul (1965) and St. Margaret’s Academy in Minneapolis (1968), and was a key figure in the merger of St. Margaret Academy and Benilde High School, which gave rise to Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School (1974). In 1978, Sister Marie Herbert began a 31-year mission at the University of St. Thomas as coordinator of the Center for Economic Education, instructor in the Economics Department, and coordinator then director for the Center for Senior Citizens’ Education.

Additionally, she served on many boards, including HealthEast Care System, Academy of Holy Angels, Cretin-Derham Hall High School, Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School and St. Mary’s Health Clinics. After her retirement, Sister Marie Herbert helped establish and direct the CSJ Ministry Office and served as Ministry Coordinator until 2009.

Sister Marie Herbert is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, James and George; and sisters, Alice and Margaret. She is survived by her sister-in-law Jean (George) Seiter, 15 nieces and nephews, their spouses, children and grandchildren, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and consociates.

A Memorial Mass of Remembrance will take place on April 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Presentation Chapel in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Memorials are requested for Risen Christ Catholic School and Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School.

Dear Sister Marie Herbert, rest in love and peace.

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
