Remembering Sister Joanna Bramble, CSJ

Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet

Joanna Bramble, CSJ

February 21, 1938 – September 3, 2023

Joanna Bramble, CSJ died on September 3, 2023, in Los Angeles, California.

Joanna and her twin sister Jeanne grew up with their family in Los Angeles. She graduated from Bishop Conaty High School in 1956 and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet community the following September.

Sister Joanna wrote of her childhood, “Our mother taught us a love of good literature, and our father encouraged us always to ask questions.

Her early years of ministry were in education through which she modeled love of life, love of literature and the need to ask questions. In 1973, she spent a summer learning community organizing, and it changed her life. She soon became a community organizer in West Oakland, California, where she co-founded Jubilee West to provide housing and services to those most in need.

Sister Joanna found her strength in community, in time spent at the Redwoods Monastery each year and in her ministry with extremely poor people. She had a deep spirituality that brought home to her the sacredness of all beings and a realization of the holiness of daily life.

May she rest in peace.

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
