July 4, 1933 – July 22, 2025

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Clare Therese Pelkey, who passed away on July 22, 2025, at Kingsway Manor in Schenectady, New York. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph for 71 years.

Sister Clare was born in Schenectady, New York, the daughter of Ruth and Milton Pelkey. After completing high school at St. Columba’s School, Clare entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, making her first profession of vows in 1954.

Sister Clare studied music at The College of Saint Rose, which guided her throughout her various ministries. She spent her early years in community teaching music while deepening her love of spirituality.

When Clare was called to offer adult faith formation, her gifts of music and theology came together, and she used them richly. Continuing her ministries in spirituality, Sister Clare earned certificates in pastoral care and spiritual direction. With a deep love for the community, Clare also served as novice director.

Always an excellent writer, Sister Clare contributed numerous columns for diocesan publications and community newsletters. She wrote a book for Eucharistic ministers that is used in parishes throughout the country. In addition to her writing skills, Clare was an avid photographer who created many notecards from her pictures.

A vibrant member of her community, Sister Clare also had a contemplative heart and a love of solitude. Her many friends—both in and beyond the community—enjoyed her creativity and her way of looking at life. She cherished time in nature, eagerly exploring new venues.

Sister Clare was predeceased by her parents and her brother, James Pelkey. She is mourned by her nieces Clare Morgan and Lorraine Robbins, several cousins and dear friends as well as the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Services for Sister Clare will be held in the Provincial House in Latham. The wake will be Monday, August 4, from 2:00-4:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 3:00 p.m. Her funeral liturgy will be Tuesday August 5, at 10:30 a.m.

Contributions in Sister Clare’s name may be made to the Office of Mission Advancement, St. Joseph’s Provincial House, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham, NY 12330 or donate online.

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
