May 2, 1924 – March 9, 2026

Sister Catherine Roberta Metsker

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Catherine Roberta (Mary Elizabeth) Metsker, who died at the Teresian House in Albany, New York, on March 9, 2026. She was 101 years old.

The only daughter of Robert and Catherine Lynch Metsker, Sister Catherine spent her early years in Clifton Forge, VA. She came north to enter the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1944. She received her bachelor’s degree in commerce in 1950 and her master’s degree in economics in 1955 from the College of St. Rose.

Sister Catherine spent her years of service in education as a high school business and economics teacher, a college registrar and professor, the community treasurer and a high school computer teacher. Her missions took her from the Capital District to Syracuse, Binghamton to Los Angeles and then to Hawai`i for thirteen years, before she retired at the provincial house in Latham.

In addition to her parents, Sister Catherine Roberta was predeceased by her two brothers Bernard and Robert, and her sister-in-law, Margaret C. (Bernard) Metsker. She has many nieces, nephews and cousins who were treasured family members, most especially her nephews John and Robert, and niece Mary Catherine Metsker, who visited her often and called regularly. Sister Catherine would always end a visit or a phone call with a reminder that “nothing is more important than family.”

Her community and loving caregivers hold special memories of Sister Catherine as a deeply spiritual and community-minded woman who lived her life with vision and dedication. The Sisters of St. Joseph are deeply appreciative of the care Sister Catherine received at the Teresian House.

Sister Catherine Roberta’s wake will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Monday, March 16, in the Chapel of Saint Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham with a prayer service at 3 p.m. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated in the Provincial House Chapel on Tuesday, March 17 at 10:30 a.m.

Contributions in Sister Catherine Roberta’s memory may be made to: Office of Mission Advancement, St. Joseph’s Provincial House, 385 Watervliet Shaker Road, Latham, NY 12110 or donate online.

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
