Sister Carmella Ann Pfohl, CSJ

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Carmella Ann (Barbara Ann) Pfohl, who died at the Teresian House in Albany, New York, on March 17, 2026. She was a Sister of St. Joseph for 70 years.

Sister Carmella was born in Syracuse, New York. The daughter of the late George T. and Carmella B. Martin Pfohl, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1955 in Troy, New York.

Sister Carmella graduated from St. John the Evangelist Catholic Academy in Syracuse and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from The College of St. Rose in Albany, New York. She pursued her N.Y.S. Certification in Administration and Supervision. Sister Carmella was a teacher, administrator and faith formation director in various parishes in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses. Her last position was at the College of St. Rose as receptionist and staff support member to the School of Education.

She always believed that she was privileged having served in the various ministries and meeting wonderful people throughout her lifetime.

Besides her parents, Sister Carmella was pre-deceased by her brother, George T. Pfohl Jr. and her sister and brother-in-law Mary Elizabeth and Fred Allgaier. Also, a nephew Kevin P. Allgaier and grand-nephew Ryan Esposito.

She is survived by her loving family, nieces and nephews Mark, Deborah, Brian, Maureen Allgaier and Sharon Secor, Rick, Brenda, Jim Gardner; Kathleen and Jim Esposito and Barbara J. Allgaier; many grand nieces and nephews, her community the Sisters of St. Joseph and her friends from The Sisters of The Holy Name and Mercy Communities.

The Community is grateful for the special care she received from Albany Care Staff personnel, the Mercy Community and Teresian staff.

Sister Carmella Ann’s wake will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Monday, March 23, in the Chapel of Saint Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham with a prayer service at 3 p.m. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated in the Provincial House Chapel on Tuesday, March 24 at 10:30 a.m.
