Remembering Sister Anne Tranelli, CSJ

Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet

February 24, 1929 – February 18, 2026

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Anne Tranelli, who died peacefully at the Teresian House in Albany, New York, on February 18, 2026. She was 96 years old and had been a Sister of St. Joseph for 70 years.

Anne and her family first lived in Pennsylvania, later coming to Syracuse. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1955, making her first vows in 1957.

Initially, Sister Anne taught in the Albany Diocese until the community asked her to study Spanish. Anne enjoyed her assignments and soon was named principal of Bishop Scully High School in Amsterdam.

In 1988, the Albany Diocese sought a Director for Hispanic Youth Life Enrichment. They tapped, Sister Anne, who was fluent in Spanish and experienced in working with young people. She was a natural—creative, committed and pastoral—and she soon became the executive director. She supervised several diocesan sites and worked to obtain grants for the numerous programs serving her clients. Sister Anne received dozens of awards and citations for her accomplishments. She took these lightly, grateful only as a help in supporting the agency.

Sister Anne’s ministry was always grounded in the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph and the call to walk with “the dear neighbor from whom we do not separate ourselves.” Each person was welcomed as a dear neighbor. Taught by a loving family and supported by years lived in community, Anne gave with joy.

Sisters who lived with Anne experienced this same joy. She lived community with generosity. A great cook, she could always be counted to enliven any gathering. She was often missioned to houses where women entered the community. Anne was mentor and model.

After more than 20 years with Hispanic Outreach Services, Sister Anne moved toward retirement, volunteering as a translator for hospitals, serving on boards, and continuing other services. Eventually, she moved to Teresian House, where she was grateful for the care provided as she continued her life of deep faith.

Anne was predeceased by her parents, Antonia and Luigi Tranelli, her bother Gino and nephew Joey. She is survived by her nieces Becky (Dave) Geroge, Mandy Tranelli and her nephew Gino (Shelly) Tranelli, many friends and Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

The sisters are grateful for the care she received from the staff at the Provincial House and Teresian House.

Services for Sister Anne will be held at St. Joseph’s Provincial House in Latham, New York. Her wake will be on Wednesday, February 25 from 2-4 p.m. with prayer at 3:00 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, February 26 at 10:30 a.m.

Contributions in Sister Anne’s memory may be made to: Office of Mission Development, St. Joseph’s Provincial House, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham, NY 12110 or donate online.

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
