September 23, 1937 – July 9, 2023
Sister Anne Eugene Metcalf died on July 9, 2023 in Los Angeles.
Mertice Metcalf was the only child of Carl Metcalf and Elva Reed. She was born in Los Angeles and received her education at Villa Cabrini Academy in Burbank and St. Mary’s Academy. She attended Mount Saint Mary’s College in Los Angeles for one year, and in the fall of 1955, she entered community with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. She received the habit on March 19, 1956 and received the name Sister Anne Eugene.
For all of her years in ministry, Sister Anne Eugene was an educator serving as a teacher and administrator in high schools throughout the Los Angeles Province. She had a great love for education and enjoyed high school students. She had the ability to move into each school and semester with renewed energy and high expectations.
Sister Anne Eugene had a caring heart. She loved her life as a Sister of St. Joseph, balancing a life of prayer and service to and for others. She will always be remembered as a faithful friend to so many.
Rest in peace sister
Mertice (Sister Anne Eugene) was a dear friend from my SMA class of 1954, and all throughout her life. I will miss her.

I remember with great fondness Sister Anne Eugene. During my years as Principal of De La Salle High School, Concord, CA., I enjoyed her frequent presence at the Brothers’ Community Mass on school mornings. She was deeply committed to education and the well-being of young people. Her faith was a lively one, her humor real and enriching, and her love for the CSJ was abiding. May she rest well in the loving and merciful arms of our God.
Farewell Sr. Anne Eugene 🥲 I still remember the day we entered. It was hard saying goodbye to our families and you were crying. Many years of dedicated service and love for others was your gift. May you rest in peace. 💕
I just learned, and I’m shattered. Thank you, dear Sister, for everything.
