Facing Our Catholic History with Native Americans: Toward Ending Unwitting Complicity
November 11, 2023 at 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm CST
Join our St. Louis Province as Toni Nash, CSJ, PhD, dives into the Catholic Church’s involvement in Native American boarding schools. This presentation will address the European worldview that fueled the colonization of Africa and the Americas in the 1400s. Sister Toni will briefly touch on CSJ involvement in U.S. policies of forced enculturation of Native Americans and explore what complicity in these systems looks like today.
Presented by Toni Nash, CSJ
Sister Toni Nash, CSJ, PhD, has collaborated with other Sisters of Earth to research and present on the effects that the “Doctrine of Discovery” has had on U. S. policies of cultural genocide toward Native Americans. Her doctoral work is on the deep roots of dysfunctional attitudes toward Earth and marginalized peoples. Her work emphasizes the potential for healing and restoration that can be found in adopting attitudes and behaviors based on the Universe’s operating principles.
