Embodying Unifying Love in Challenging Times

Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet

Five individuals stand with signs about welcoming the stranger with love

We continue to witness the news reports of violent and troubling interactions between ICE and Border Patrol agents and people in Minnesota, Los Angeles, and beyond, regardless of immigration status. This is a moment that reminds us of how Jesus modeled for us the importance of loving the dear neighbor by going to the margins, being present, and asking, “What do you need?”

Our six founding sisters recognized the suffering around them and embodied Jesus’ mission by dividing the city and asking the people what they needed. Our sisters and charism partners have brought about the Incarnation of God’s Love throughout history. May our charism of unifying love inspire us to continue this legacy of furthering justice and standing in solidarity with our immigrant neighbors through the many opportunities available to support them.

We are called to live our faith in both prayer and action. As we respond to the urgent needs of our immigrant neighbors, may we be grounded in hope, love and faith in our loving God who stands with the marginalized.

Prayer for Hope, Justice and Endurance

God of mercy and God of justice, we lift our voices to You in a time when many are hurting, frightened, and weary. You see every injustice that people endure. You see the families torn apart, the lives cut short and the freedoms suppressed. You hear the cries that go unanswered by earthly powers. Nothing is hidden from Your sight.

Strengthen the hearts of those who suffer under the weight of oppression. Wrap them in Your protection when human systems fail them. Let Your presence be a refuge for those who feel forgotten, unheard or unsafe. Where fear tries to take root, plant courage. Where despair tries to settle, plant hope.

Guide us, God, to trust that Your justice is deeper than any government’s authority, and Your compassion is stronger than any force that seeks to harm. Remind us that You stand with the oppressed, that You defend the vulnerable, and that Your light cannot be extinguished by human cruelty.

Empower communities to stand together in love, to resist hatred without becoming hardened by it, and to pursue justice without losing sight of compassion. Give wisdom to leaders who are willing to listen and soften the hearts of those who misuse their power.

For every life lost, bring comfort. For every family separated, bring restoration. For every person living in fear, bring peace that surpasses understanding.

God, keep hope alive in us. Help us trust that You are moving even when change feels slow, that You are healing even when wounds feel deep, and that You are guiding us toward a future where dignity and freedom belong to every person You have created.

Amen.

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
