Where we are

In our effort to love the dear neighbor without distinction, our sisters find themselves called to serve all around the world.

While the Sisters of St. Joseph was founded in France in 1650, when asked to move to the United States in 1836, they obliged and thrived, spreading out to minister across the country. From there, they opened missions in Asia, South America and Africa.

Today, our sisters and associates serve the dear neighbor in the United States, Japan and Peru. We are one international congregation with provinces in Albany, New York; Los Angeles, California, St. Louis, Missouri and St. Paul, Minnesota. Together, we support sisters and associates in ministry in 37 states, including Hawaii.

Internationally, we have a vice province in Peru that supports sisters and associates there and associates in Chile , and we have sisters who live and serve in Japan.

A global history

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are just one of many congregations of Sisters of St. Joseph who can trace our founding back to Le Puy, France. To learn more about other congregations and where they serve, please visit:

About us

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet are a congregation of Catholic sisters. We, and those who share our charism and mission, are motivated in all things by our profound love of God and our dear neighbors. We seek to build communities and bridge divides between people. Since our first sisters gathered in 1650, our members have been called to “do all things of which women are capable.” The first sisters of our congregation arrived in St. Louis, Missouri in 1836, and we now have additional locations in St. Paul, Albany, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Japan and Peru. Today, we commit to respond boldly to injustice and dare to be prophetic.
