July 13, 1926 – July 15, 2026

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Kathleen Martin, CSJ, who died peacefully on July 15, 2026 at St. John of God Care Center in Los Angeles. She had celebrated her 100th birthday just two days before.
Kathleen was born in San Diego, California on July 13, 1926, as the third of five children. She once said, that where she grew up, “everything revolved around church and school. My home life was simple, happy and secure. My childhood memories are happy ones. I was proud to be a ‘Martin.’”
Kathleen received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in March 1945 and was given the name Sister Mary Nicholas in honor of her father.
For 27 years, Kathleen ministered in elementary education and administration. She also planned for the House of Prayer in the former Los Angeles Province, and served as a staff member. After retiring to Holy Family Community, she attended activities as her energy and interest allowed, always a welcome member of any group. She volunteered her pastoral skills for Vitas Hospice and the CalVet residents.
Over the years, as her spirituality deepened, she came to realize anew God’s desire to be in loving relationship with his beloved Kathleen.
Funeral services for Sister Kathleen will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Chapel at Carondelet Center, 11999 Chalon Rd. in Los Angeles. Watch via livestream.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Los Angeles Province, 11999 Chalon Road, Los Angeles, CA 90049 or donate online.
May she rest in peace.
Sister Katherine and my mother, Patricia Sutton, were classmates in the Class of 44 at The Academy of Our Lady of Peace. They remained close friends, enjoyed lunches together with other Class of 44 friends, until my mother passed in 2005. I had the pleasure of meeting her several times when I was back in San Diego. May She Rest in Peace!
