Update: Trafficking and the World Cup

The Carondelet Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Coordinators met in Albany, NY, this past April in conjunction with a week-long Congregational Collaborative meeting. During the Congregational meeting department leaders from the provinces and vice provinces explored how we can work locally, nationally and internationally to “be and act more as one in new ways.” The Congregational group affirmed, and agreed to find ways to support, the critical work of human rights and human dignity.

As follow-up to the Albany meeting, Hna. Sally Harper, CSJ, from the Vice Province of Peru shared this letter to address recent efforts in Peru and Latin America by the Vice Province of Peru in collaboration with the Conference of Major Superiors in Peru.

Greetings from Peru!

I thought I would write to let you know that I am now attending the meetings of RED KAWSAY which is the network of the Conference of Religious of Peru (equivalent to LCWR and MSM combined) working against human trafficking in Peru.

There are different groups working against human trafficking in Latin America: RED UN GRITO POR LA VIDA (NETWORK-A CRY FOR LIFE) in Brazil; RED KAWSAY in Peru; SUMA in Central America.

This summer, in Latin America the focus of everyone’s attention has the World Cup which is in Brazil. The enclosed handout was used to heighten awareness of the trafficking that takes place during sporting events. The saying on the front which is being used throughout the campaign is PLAY IN FAVOR OF LIFE—DENOUNCE HUMAN TRAFFICKING (TRATA de PERSONAS).

June 27, we held a press conference (at the mid-point of the games) to keep the momentum going.

Hope that all goes well with you in your work for justice, Sally
