Get on the Bus was founded by Sisters Suzanne Steffen and Suzanne Jabro, Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, who animated the effort of a small group of women religious and formerly incarcerated women.

In 1999, a group of women religious participated in a delegation to the women’s prison in Chowchilla, located four hours from Los Angeles. Suzanne says, “The women begged us to bring their children. We could not ignore their sorrow, their sobs and desperate pleas. We started with one bus, nine families with 17 children. This year we are planning for 43 buses, 1200 children with their caregivers. We will go to 11 prisons for mother and father day celebrations.”
